Dobby entered the story as the abused house-elf of the Malfoy family, forced to punish himself for every defiant thought. In 1992 he disobeyed his masters to warn Harry Potter not to return to Hogwarts, and in 1993 Harry freed him by hiding the diary inside a sock that Lucius Malfoy threw away. Dobby chose to work at Hogwarts for wages, becoming the castle's only free, paid elf.
